What Not to Flush on a Septic System

Only toilet paper and human waste should go down the toilet on a septic system. Wipes, grease, feminine products, medications and harsh chemicals can clog the tank or kill the bacteria that treat waste.

Never Flush These

  • Wipes, even ones labeled flushable
  • Feminine products and diapers
  • Paper towels and tissues
  • Dental floss and cotton swabs
  • Cat litter
  • Medications

Keep These Out of Drains

Cooking grease and oil harden in pipes and add to the scum layer. Paint, solvents and large amounts of bleach can harm the bacteria your tank depends on.

Go Easy on the Disposal

A garbage disposal adds food solids that settle as sludge. If you use one, plan on pumping more often.

Water Habits That Help

Spread laundry across the week, fix running toilets and leaky faucets, and send rain gutters away from the drain field so it does not flood.

Common Questions

Are flushable wipes safe for septic?

No. They do not break down like toilet paper and can clog pipes and pumps.

Is normal bleach use okay?

Normal household amounts are usually fine. Avoid pouring large amounts down drains.

Do I need septic-safe toilet paper?

Paper that breaks apart quickly in water is the safest choice.
