Warning Signs Your Septic System Is Failing

The most common signs of septic failure are slow drains throughout the house, gurgling pipes, sewage odors, wet or spongy ground over the drain field, and sewage backing up into tubs or floor drains.

Signs Inside the Home

Problems usually show up first at the lowest fixtures.

  • Several drains running slowly at once
  • Gurgling toilets or sinks
  • Water backing up when the washer drains
  • Sewage odor near floor drains

Signs in the Yard

Outside, look over the tank lid and the drain field area.

  • Standing water or soggy soil without recent rain
  • Grass that is much greener than the rest of the lawn
  • Odors near the tank or field
  • Sunken or cracked soil over lines

Why Clay Soil Matters in East Texas

Much of the Tyler area has clay-heavy soil that drains slowly. During long wet spells the drain field can saturate, so symptoms may appear or worsen after heavy rain.

What to Do First

Cut back on water use right away: spread out laundry, skip long showers and avoid running the dishwasher. Then call for an inspection so the cause can be found before damage spreads. Keep people and pets away from any surfacing sewage.

Common Questions

Can a full tank look like a failed system?

Yes. An overdue tank causes many of the same symptoms. Pumping and an inspection help tell the difference.

Is surfacing sewage dangerous?

Yes. Raw sewage carries bacteria. Keep children and pets away and call for service.

Can a failing drain field be repaired?

Sometimes. Options depend on the cause, the soil and local permit rules, which an inspection will show.
