How Long Do Septic Tanks Last?

A well-kept concrete or plastic tank can last for decades. Drain fields and mechanical parts, like aerobic compressors, usually wear out sooner than the tank itself.

Lifespan by Material

Material plays a big part in tank life.

  • Concrete: very long-lasting, but can crack or have baffles corrode
  • Plastic or polyethylene: resists rust, can shift if installed poorly
  • Fiberglass: lightweight and corrosion resistant
  • Steel: found on older systems and prone to rust

What Wears Out First

Baffles, tees, lids and risers often need attention long before the tank fails. On aerobic systems, aerators, pumps and alarms are the usual repair items. Drain fields fail most often from solids carried out of an overdue tank.

Signs of an Aging System

  • Repeated backups even after pumping
  • Standing water over the field
  • Cracks or crumbling seen during a pump-out
  • Rusty steel tank walls
  • Odors that do not go away

How to Make It Last

Pump on schedule, keep vehicles off the tank and field, fix leaky fixtures, and keep grease and wipes out of drains. An inspection every few years catches small problems early.

Common Questions

Can a tank be repaired instead of replaced?

Often. Baffles, lids and risers can be replaced. Severe cracks or collapse usually mean replacement.

Do older homes have smaller tanks?

Many do. Older tanks may be undersized for today's water use.

Does replacement need a permit?

Yes. In Texas, replacing an OSSF generally requires a permit.
